CHS Secondary school work experience (WEX) program

Our work experience program aims to provide students with an opportunity to gain insight into the healthcare industry. The program is available to ACT students undertaking years 10 -12. Students participating in the program are given an opportunity to spend 4 days in either clinical or non-clinical areas to observe and participate in the daily activities of the area.

The program runs throughout the months of April to December.

The program at CHS is very popular. This year we received approximately 500 applications. Priority for placements in CHS is given to undergraduate students who have been allocated placement to complete their health degrees. Due to this the number of available places for work experience students varies and a placement may not always be able to be offered.

Placements are available within:

  • Ward environments
  • Clinic environments
  • Medical Imaging
  • Trauma Service
  • Walk in Centres
  • Physiotherapy (University of Canberra Hospital)
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Dentistry (Health Centres)
  • Podiatry (community)
  • Nutrition (community)
  • Medical Physics & Radiation Engineering
  • Healthcare Technology Management
  • Information Technology
  • Health Protection
  • Infrastructure & Health Support Services

We are unable to take placements in the following areas:

  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Emergency
  • Operating Theatres
  • Paediatrics
  • Delivery Suite
  • Sexual Health
  • Pharmacy
  • Pathology
  • Mental Health
  • Psychology

If you wish to apply for the program you will firstly require approval from your school WEX Coordinator and then you will need to submit the application below. It is important to be aware that an application will not necessarily guarantee a placement.

Canberra Health Services fully embrace diversity and strive for an inclusive workplace. We strongly encourage students from all diversity groups to apply for this program as we consciously acknowledge experiences and celebrate differences to reflect the diverse community that we serve.

The application can be saved as a draft however any further edits need to be made on the same device (IP address). Drafts will be automatically lost after 90days.
