Older Persons Health

The Australian Government provides aged care services for all members of the community. There are specific services Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can access.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working in aged care have the same access as all other Australians to the aged care workforce education and training opportunities.

Older Age Health Assessment

There are four services on the Medicare Benefits Schedule for older age health assessments: two for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and two for other Australians aged 75 years and over.

Healing Foundation - Stolen Generations Resources

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healing Foundation supports organisations around Australia to develop and strengthen healing programs for members of the Stolen Generation.

Dementia Australia - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples suffering with dementia, their carers and families, and community can use a wellness approach to successful ageing.

Services

Carers Australia

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander carers provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or who are frail.  Carers Australia has a range of programs such as counselling and support groups, respite and education, and the Carers Recognition Program.

CarersACT – Support for Aboriginal Carers

The CarersACT Program Coordinator has a strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural needs and works directly with carers to link them into culturally appropriate supports.

Burrunju Aboriginal Corporation

This program gives one on one support to Indigenous Carers, providing respite with activities and outings. The program helps Aboriginal Carers to access mainstream services.
