Food Services menu and meal times

We have a comprehensive menu that caters to the large number of specialised diets among our patients.

No hot drinks are permitted on the wards—please ask your nurse for information on tea and coffee making facilities.

Please speak with your nurse if you are having difficulty with your meals.

Meal times

Food Services deliver meals to you between the following times:

  • Breakfast – 6:30am to 9am
  • Lunch – 11:45am to 1pm
  • Dinner – 5:15pm to 7pm


You can enjoy a beverage and a small snack for morning tea, afternoon tea and supper. The specific snack times are as follows:

  • Morning tea – 10:30am
  • Afternoon tea – 2:30pm
  • Supper – 8pm


Food Services offer a 14-day menu cycle that is designed in collaboration with the Nutrition Department.

You receive a menu each morning for the following day. They are collected throughout the day. Please ask our staff for help to fill out the form.

Uncompleted menus result in a default menu being delivered to you. This selection is determined by Food Services and the Nutrition Department to ensure your dietary requirements are met.

Special diets

Please order all special diets through the Nutrition Department. Please ask our nursing staff to organise a visit by a Nutrition Assistant to discuss your dietary requirements.

Kosher meals

Please contact Food Services five days before your scheduled admission if you require kosher meals. You must include your name, date of admission and anticipated length of stay.

Food options for family and friends

We have many options for meals and refreshments within the hospital.

Food and drink vending machines are located outside the staff cafeteria on Level 3 of the main hospital. Please remember hot drinks are not permitted on the wards.


Cafes are located in the main hospital lobby, on the Ground Floor of the Canberra Region Cancer Centre and on Level 2 above the main entrance of the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children.

The Canberra Hospital Auxiliary Shop provides a range of goods and services for patients and visitors the hospital.

We are open 7 days a week, except for Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. We are a cash only premises — we don’t accept EFTPOS or credit card.

Sunday — 10am to 2pm

Public Holidays — 10am to 2pm


There are a number of clinical pharmacists on each ward that ensure your medications are accurately supplied. Our ward staff administer these to you.

The main pharmacy at the hospital is located at Level 2, Building 1 and supplies all medication for hospital patients.

Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm and Saturday and Sunday between 9am and 4:30pm. Emergency Service is between 4:30pm and 7pm daily.

Terry White Chemmart Garran

Terry White Chemmart Garran is located in the main foyer of the hospital and can help with your general pharmaceutical needs.

The pharmacy also provides Diabetes Medication Reviews, fittings for medical compression stockings and garments and whooping cough and flu vaccinations. They are also a provider of the National Diabetes Services Scheme.

You can order specific medication that is hard to obtain at other pharmacies. Prescriptions can also be left on file at the pharmacy for your convenience.

Sundays 10am to 6pm

Trolley Services

Various trolley services operate on the wards each day.

Trolley service

The trolley service is run by hospital volunteers and the Auxiliary daily from 10am. They offer a large range of toiletries, confectionary, magazines, stamps and other items.

Newspaper trolley service

The newspaper trolley service operates on most wards from Monday to Friday after 9:45am. Please contact the Auxiliary for special newspaper deliveries.

Library trolley service

The library trolley service operates on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 9:30am and 11:30am. This service is subject to volunteer availability and times may vary.

Courtesy Bus

We offer a free courtesy to assist patients, visitors and staff with transport across the hospital campus. The service operates on Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm, except on weekends and public holidays.

Courtesy bus stops are located at the Emergency Department, Canberra Region Cancer Centre, Bateson Road, Building 15 (outpatient services), The Canberra Hospital main entrance and the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children.

Please look for the pick-up and drop-off signage to help you easily navigate to each stop.

Our bus accommodates 15 people and is wheelchair accessible.

Flower Service

Providing arrangement and disposal of flowers in wards where flowers are permitted.
