North Canberra Hospital

North Canberra Hospital (formerly Calvary Public Hospital Bruce) is located in the ACT and is accredited by the Canberra Region Medical Education Council (CRMEC). Itʼs approximately 20 minutes from the Canberra Hospital. There are over 285 beds across the facilities, with staff and volunteers providing a range of acute care, including inpatient, outpatient and emergency department services.

Previously Calvary Public Hospital Bruce, operation of the hospital transitioned to Canberra Health Services on 3 July 2023 as part of the northside hospital project.

North Canberra Hospital has over 285 beds across the facilities, with staff and volunteers providing a range of acute care, including inpatient, outpatient and emergency department services for patients right across the ACT and into the surrounding areas of NSW.

North Canberra Hospital is affiliated with the Australian National University and has a commitment to high quality education for all its trainees. Junior Medical Officers (JMOs) are allocated to CRMEC accredited terms only.

Rotations are available in cardiology, general medicine, orthopaedic surgery, emergency medicine, psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, general surgery and obstetrics and gynaecology.

Each rotation gives you access to tutorials and education sessions, grand rounds, clinical meetings, journal clubs and extensive research opportunities.

Cardiology
  • emergency cardiology cover
  • access to the Inpatient Coronary Care Unit and inpatient cardiology ward patients
  • exposure to echocardiogram services, exercise stress testing and cardioversions
  • access to outpatient cardiac rehabilitation services
Emergency Medicine
  • 24-hour emergency cover
  • over 48,000 patients managed annually
  • exposure to various procedures, including basic and advanced life support, plaster cast application, suturing and intubation
General Medicine
  • general medical teams each supervised by physicians with sub-speciality interests, including gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, cardiology, rheumatology, infectious diseases and geriatrics
  • inpatient workload and opportunity to participate in outpatients if interested
  • exposure to cardioversions in coronary care
  • exposure to endoscopies and common procedures such as nasogastric tube insertion, bladder catheterisation and defibrillation
  • daily theatre lists
General Surgery
  • general surgical teams that cover most general surgical procedures
  • elective ENT, maxillofacial, ophthalmological and vascular procedures
  • direct liaison with consultants
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • unit provides antenatal care, postnatal assessment and inpatient and outpatient gynaecological management
  • daily theatre list in elective surgery
Orthopaedic Surgery
  • unit provides expert orthopaedic management
  • exposure to the management of fractures, dislocations, soft tissue injuries, compartment syndromes and septic joints
  • exposure to elective procedures
  • procedural exposure to application of casts, tying surgical knots and suturing
  • weekly fracture clinics
  • weekly x-ray case presentation sessions
  • weekly outpatient sessions
Psychiatry
  • opportunity to be involved in the care of patients with mental health disorders in outpatient and inpatient settings
  • exposure to the Mental Health Act
  • involvement in the Crisis and Assessment Treatment Team, which provides emergency assessment and management of patients in the community
