Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people - lifetime risky drinking

    Lifetime risky drinking in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by state and territory, National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey 2018-19

    • In 2018-19 22.4% of ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people reported drinking at levels that exceeded the guidelines for lifetime risk of harm from alcohol related disease.

    The 2019 NHMRC Australian Guidelines to reduce health risks from drinking alcohol 1 state

    For healthy men and women:

    • Drinking no more than 4 standard drinks on a single occasion reduces the risk of alcohol-related injury from that occasion.
    • Drinking no more than 2 standard drinks on any day reduces the lifetime risk of harm from alcohol-related disease or injury.

    For children and young people under 18 years of age:

    • Not drinking alcohol is the safest option, especially for children under 15 years of age.
