The ACT Government is committed to providing high quality health services to Canberra’s rapidly growing population, which is expected to surpass 500,000 people by 2030. As a population increases so does demand for healthcare. As part of this commitment the ACT Government conducted a Northside Scoping Study in 2017-18. This study included a Conditional Assessment and Strategic Asset Management Plan for the existing hospital.
As a result of this work the ACT Government has committed to continue planning a new northside hospital, with the aim to start construction by mid-decade. This included funding in the 2021-22 Budget of more than $10 million over two years. This funding will assist ACT Health in preparing a business case for the new Northside Hospital. To progress this work, ACT Health has established a Northside Hospital project team and has appointed commercial, technical and legal advisors.
In developing the Northside Hospital business case ACT Health will work with partners, stakeholders and the community to determine the right mix of clinical services and a modern sustainable design. The business case is expected to be ready for consideration as part of the 2023-24 Budget.
To help us plan for a hospital on the Northside, and new health facilities closer to home in your communities, we want to collaborate with you to design public health care services for our growing region.
We want to make sure you have a health system that is flexible, provides services that work together and delivers what you need, as close to home as possible.
How to have your say
We invite you to take part in our consultation and help shape the early planning and design of a new Northside Hospital. This stage of consultation is open from 18 October to 29 November 2022 with online and in-person activities happening across Canberra. If you have already provided feedback, this is being collated and is being used to inform the project. You can still participate in this stage of consultation, which is asking for more detailed information from you about what you need from a new hospital.
