Ward 12B low dependency unit
This project saw the delivery of an additional 10 beds for adults experiencing acute mental health illness at Canberra Hospital.
Completed in record time, this project was delivered in response to the growing pressure on acute mental health inpatient beds, and provided:
- an additional 10-bed mental health adult acute inpatient beds;
- a de-escalation room to reduce and prevent agitation;
- a quiet room / lounge;
- a sensory modulation room for consumers to engage in activities to relax;
- private courtyards; and
- associated clinical administration areas.
The ward provides inpatient assessment, treatment and therapeutic interventions for people experiencing moderate to severe mental illness.
After nearly 12 months of refurbishment to upgrade and modernise this ward, it is contributing significantly to providing much-needed mental health services.
This ward will reduce waiting times for mental health patients and improve access to specialised and individual interventions, reducing the recovery time and length of stay for patients in hospital and will reduce pressure for acute inpatient beds.
