The Canberra Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) now has an additional eight beds, following completion of a $13.5 million expansion.
These extra beds, which bring the total number of physical beds in Canberra Hospital’s ICU to 39, will help ensure patients can continue to receive lifesaving care, including ventilation and high-level health services following trauma or complex surgery.
These beds will expand our capacity to deliver lifesaving treatment and care to Canberrans and the surrounding region for many years to come.
Some of the patient-centred features include:
- ‘intelligent’ beds designed to reduce in-hospital patient pressure injuries, and improve patient comfort and safety
- open plan layout with wide windows to welcome natural light
- improved family meeting areas and amenities to help support loved ones of patients
This project is only one component of the infrastructure investment program that Canberra Health Services is undertaking. On top of this new unit, a new 60-bed ICU will be opened as part of the broader Canberra Hospital Expansion.
The expansion will ensure people from Canberra and the surrounding region have access to lifesaving care, acute medical treatment and intensive care monitoring as the region’s population continues to grow.
