Life Expectancy

Life expectancy at birth, ACT and Australia, 2010-12 to 2019-21

    • Life expectancy continues to be high in the ACT and is expected to increase slightly over the next 10 years
    • Of the Australian states and territories in 2019-2021, the ACT recorded the highest life expectancy at birth for both females (86.3 years) and males (82.7 years).
    • Life expectancy (life tables) are based on death rates over a particular period of time. Mortality rates used in the Australian and state and territory life tables are based on the occurrence of deaths in a three-year period and the estimated resident population at the mid-point of that period1. The life tables do not take into account future assumed improvements in mortality.
