Nursing and Midwifery Office

The ACT Health Nursing and Midwifery Office (NMO) provides strategic nursing and midwifery advice on local, national and international issues to the ACT Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, ACT Health and Canberra Health Services Executives and North Canberra Hospital Executives. Their principal focus is on health policy, professional and regulatory governance, career development and workforce issues.

The team also manages strategic projects on workforce development, career advancement, scholarships, workloads, and other initiatives. The NMO researches and responds to government and non-government agencies on national and international issues on health policy, regulation and professional standards.

The NMO is led by the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer and supported by Nurse and Midwifery Advisors and Project Officers.

Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer

The ACT Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer (CNMO) is the professional leader for the nursing and midwifery professions in the ACT.

The CNMO is responsible for leading the strategic direction of the primary, community and tertiary services delivered by nurses and midwives and the ongoing development of the professions across the Territory. They represent the ACT on the Australian and New Zealand Council of Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officers.

 

Catherine McGrory

Acting ACT Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer

Catherine is the current acting ACT Chief Nursing Midwifery Officer. Her substantive role is coordinating the implementation of nurse and midwife to patient ratios project across the ACT.

Catherine has over 26 years experience in nursing, demonstrating diversity in her nursing career from novice nurse, nurse education, clinical nurse management, health infrastructure planning, university lecturing, projects, policy, governance and government business. She has 3 teenage children and aspires to continually contribute to the nursing and midwifery profession.

As with every career there have been challenges – and in these moments Catherine has developed the most. Her interest in workforce, workplace processes and legislation have led her to study a Bachelor of Law and continually reflect on the concept of authentic people centred care, and workplace joy.

Nurse and Midwife Support (NM Support) is the first national telephone and online service to offer health support to nurses and midwives in Australia. It is free, confidential and available 24/7.

N&M Support strive to contribute to better health and wellbeing for nurses and midwives, and safer care for the public.

Phone support

Nurses and midwives who call the telephone service will have 24/7 access to an experienced team who can assist with a wide range of health and wellbeing related issues that may be affecting their practice. The service also provides support to nursing and midwifery students, educators, employers and concerned family members.

Who's involved

NM Support is a Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) initiative and is run by Turning Point, a leading addiction treatment, research and education organisation. NM Support is independent of the NMBA and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre was established in 1994 to provide leadership to the drug and alcohol field in Victoria, Australia. Position Statement - The Registered Midwife in Maternal, Child and Family Health services in the ACT

The position of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Nursing and Midwifery Office is that Registered Midwives, who have completed a post graduate qualification in Maternal, Child and Family Health, can work to the full scope of practice in this speciality area in the ACT.
