International Nurses and Midwives Week 2018

Globally, nurses and midwives are recognised every year through:

  • The International Day of the Midwife which is celebrated annually on 5 May.

  • The International Nurses Day which is celebrated annually on 12 May.

The ACT Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards celebrate the distinctive contribution made individually and/or collectively by nurses and midwives to the people they care for. The Awards recognise the outstanding professional accomplishments made within the public and private hospitals and the community-based and primary health care sectors of the Territory.

The 2018 commemorative events are scheduled throughout the week of 5-12 May and include:

International Midwives Day

2018 Theme: Midwives leading the way with quality care

Local Celebrations

Join the Canberra 'Walk with Midwives' around Lake Burley Griffin on Saturday morning, 5 May; a 5 Km ‘Bridge to Bridge’ walk as part of the national celebrations for International Midwives Day.

The 2018 Midwives Oration is hosted by the Australian College of Midwives, ACT Branch. The Oration titled, ‘It’s About Time’, will be delivered by Alison Chandra on Tuesday 1st May.

Nurses & Midwives Remembrance & Thanksgiving Wreath Laying Ceremony

Australian War Memorial [1330 hours]

The commemoration acknowledges and honours all nurses and midwives who served Australia in times of conflict and peace.

All are welcome to the ceremony in the Captain Reg Saunders Courtyard, and to join guests at afternoon tea.

The ACT Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards recognise and reward exemplary contributions made individually and/or collectively by nurses and midwives across all health care sectors of the Territory.

The Awards dinner acknowledge the excellence of nurses and midwives in clinical practice, management, leadership, education, and quality and research categories.
