Medical Assessment and Planning Unit

Medical Assessment and Planning Unit

The Medical Assessment and Planning Unit (MAPU) is a 16 bed short stay unit for patients with complex and 'undifferentiated' medical problems needing assessment before referral and transfer to the appropriate Canberra Hospital inpatient unit.

What is MAPU?

This unit has been created to complement the role of the Emergency Department in acute assessment. It is a designated hospital ward specifically staffed and designed to receive medical inpatients for assessment, care and treatment for a designated period of approximately 36 hours.

Diagnostic services including pathology and imaging will be available for MAPU patients as a priority. With this in mind, MAPU is expected to ease the delivery of timely medical assessment, diagnosis and patient care.

MAPU Admission Criteria

All MAPU patients will be admitted by a single point of entry via referral from the Canberra Hospital Emergency Department.

MAPU will accept complex medical patients with multiple co-morbidities who:

do not have a clear diagnosis

OR

have more than one diagnosis but the primary diagnosis is not clear

AND

will benefit from a short period of intense investigation and management prior to transfer to an inpatient ward or discharge home.

Who can refer patients to MAPU?

Referrals to MAPU will be accepted from:

  • Emergency physicians and registrars;
  • Other consultants and registrars (including surgical, psychiatrists, anaesthetists).

At present, patients will not be accepted to MAPU directly from the community or primary care.
