Gynaecology cares for and treats people with problems relating to the reproductive organs including ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes.
About this service
Our specialist clinics can help diagnose, manage and treat a wide range of gynaecological problems.
We will book you into the right type of clinic based on what your GP tells us about you in your referral.
Gynaecology is also offered through North Canberra Hospital surgical services.
Who we care for
Our clinics are available to anyone experiencing a range of gynaecology problems, including:
- period problems
- endometriosis
- pelvic pain
- urine leakage
- prolapse
- menopause symptoms
- cervical screening test abnormalities
- fertility problems
- heavy bleeding with a period, and
- suspected cancer.
We have a separate area called the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit if you are experiencing problems in early pregnancy, like miscarriage, bleeding and ectopic pregnancies.
We offer these services for free if you have a Medicare Card or Asylum seeker card. We will see you if you don’t have one of these, but there may be a cost for this.
How to access this service
You need a referral from your GP to use our services.
We look at your referral and make appointments based on how urgent or serious your problem is. If your problem is not life threatening, you may need to wait longer for an appointment. If your problem is very serious, we will see you as soon as possible.
We will send you a letter in the mail to tell you the date and time of your appointment. We also send a text message two days before your appointment to remind you.
For more information, please call us on (02) 5124 7625. You will hear an answering machine message. If you leave a message, we will call you back as soon as possible.
What to expect
In your appointment, you will see a gynaecology doctor. They will ask you questions and look at any tests you have already had with your GP. They might need to do an internal examination at the visit depending on your problem, but they will explain this and ask your permission first.
You can bring someone with you on the day, but we also have a nurse who can help you if we need to perform any examinations or procedures.
What to bring to your appointment
- Medicare card
- Any letters or correspondence from your GP
- Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
- List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
- Previous x-ray films, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports.
