Sub Acute Geriatric Unit (SAGU)
The Sub Acute Geriatric Unit is an inpatient unit managed by the Division of Rehabilitation, Aged and Community Care at the Canberra Hospital.
We are a Multidisciplinary team of Geriatricians, junior Doctors, Nursing Staff, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Dieticians, Speech Pathologists and Allied Health Assistants.
The Sub Acute Geriatric Unit is an inpatient service for persons over the age of 80 who have suffered functional decline or functional deficits as a result of an acute illness.
Our focus is patient centred restorative care promoting independence and well being to undertake their own activities of daily living to enable safe discharge home.
Admission to SAGU is based on meeting the admission criteria and pre admission assessment. This will be determined by the Geriatrician and Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC).
Referrals and bookings
Admission is usually through referrals from other inpatient units within the hospital in consultation with the CNC and Geriatrician.

Allied Health staff work on the unit Monday to Friday, 8:30am-5pm (excluding public holidays).
