Medical Assessment and Planning Unit

The Medical Assessment and Planning Unit (MAPU) is a 16 bed short stay unit for patients with complex and/or 'undifferentiated' medical problems needing assessment before referral and transfer to the appropriate Canberra Hospital inpatient unit or discharge home.

What is MAPU?

The primary role of the MAPU is to provide an assessment and planning unit for complex, acute medical patients presenting to Canberra Hospital. It is a designated hospital ward (ward 7B) specifically staffed and designed to receive medical inpatients for assessment, care and treatment for a period of less than 72 hours.

Assessment will involve multidisciplinary review by medical, nursing, and allied health staff. Diagnostic services including pathology and imaging will be prioritised for MAPU patients to minimise the length of time prior to discharge or transfer to inpatient wards.

Initial management of medical problems will take place within the unit including acute medical treatment and / or other allied health intervention. A Social Worker will be available to help expedite discharge where appropriate.
