Diabetes Service and Endocrinology Service

The ACT Health Diabetes Service and Endocrinology Service provide acute and ambulatory outpatient services to consumers of the ACT and surrounding NSW region. We provide treatment and education to consumers and carers with diabetes and endocrine disorders.

Individual and group clinics are provided by Endocrinologists, Diabetes Nurse Educators, Dietitians, Podiatrists and Social Workers Monday to Friday 8.30AM - 5PM.

ACT Health Diabetes Service

The ACT Health Diabetes Service is a multidisciplinary team comprising medical, nursing and allied health professionals. The service provides a coordinated and integrated service between the Canberra Hospital and various community based locations within the ACT. The service provides diabetes care and treatment across the continuum for pre-diabetes, children, adolescents and adults, women during pregnancy, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.  The following services are provided by the teams;

  • Group programs for people with pre-diabetes
  • Individual and group education programs for people with diabetes and their carers
  • Vision screen and foot assessment for people with diabetes
  • Insulin pump initiation and stabilisation
  • Continuous glucose monitoring
  • Paediatric service for infants and children up to 18 years
  • Adolescent and Young Person Service ( Transition Service aged 18-21 years)
  • Specialised satellite multidisciplinary medical, nursing and allied health services for adults and paediatric clients within community settings
  • High Risk Foot Service for people with or at high risk of acute foot complications (with or without diabetes)
  • Pregnancy service for women planning pregnancy, gestational diabetes, type 1 and type 2 diabetes during pregnancy
  • Education program for people with cultural and/or special needs
  • Psychological support through our diabetes social workers (paediatric/adolescent and adult)
  • Health professional education, clinical placements and diabetes education training program

Referrals

  • All medical appointments for diabetes and endocrinology require a medical referral from a General Practitioner or other medical specialist.
  • As per Australian Medicare guidelines, non-eligible patients will be billed accordingly. (All people who do not have a current Australian Medicare Card will be charged accordingly).

Endocrinology Service

The Endocrinology Service comprises ten dedicated endocrinologists. Eight endocrinologists provide diabetes and endocrinology services for adolescents and adults and two endocrinologists provide paediatric services (paediatric endocrinology). The endocrinologists provide acute and ambulatory outpatient services and an on-call service within the Canberra Hospital.

High Risk Foot Service

The following services are provided in individual clinics by registered podiatrists. The team provide a High Risk Foot Service in the acute and ambulatory outpatient setting at the Canberra Hospital for people with or at high risk of acute foot complications. Patients without diabetes can also be referred to this service. A weekly multidisciplinary clinic for inpatients and outpatients is conducted by Endocrinologists, Diabetes Podiatrists, Vascular Surgeons, Infectious Diseases Specialists, Radiologists, Diabetes Nurse Educator, Orthotists/ Prosthetists, Tissue viability unit, Community Nursing and Diabetes Dietitian.

Type of Services

  • High Risk Foot Service including multidisciplinary care for people with acute foot complications (with and without diabetes)
    • Foot ulcers (below ankle)
    • Foot infection (low grade)
    • Suspected Charcot’s neuro-arthropathy​

Adolescent and Young Person Diabetes Service (Transition Clinic)

The following service is provided in individual clinics by a multidisciplinary team: Endocrinologist, Paediatric Endocrinologist, Diabetes Nurse Educator, Dietitian and Social Worker. The team provide an acute and ambulatory service at the Canberra Hospital. This service is provided for young people with diabetes who are either moving from paediatric diabetes services to adult diabetes services or who are newly diagnosed and are not yet ready for the full responsibility of their care within the adult diabetes service.
