Healthy Children and Young People

The Health Promotion Branch has been funded by the Commonwealth Government through the National Partnership Agreement on Preventive Health (NPAPH), and by the ACT Government through the Healthy Kids, Healthy Future budget initiative.

The aim is to deliver a range of preventive health initiatives that improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people aged from birth to 25 years living the ACT.

About the ACT Healthy Children’s Initiative 2010/11 to 2014/15

The ACT Healthy Children’s Initiative is the name which has been given to the range of projects and campaigns to be delivered under the NPAPH and the Healthy Kids, Healthy Future initiative. Funding from both sources provides an unprecedented and unique opportunity to influence health-related behaviours in children and young people in the Canberra region.

A list of projects which are managed and/or funded by the Health Promotion Branch are listed below:

Early Childhood & Preschool

Schools

  • SmartStart For Kids! (funding provided to SmartStart For Kids! for program delivery).
  • Healthy Transitions program (funding provided to the YWCA Canberra for program delivery)
  • ACT Healthy School Canteens
  • Active Travel to School Program.
    The program is in the final stages of development and will be piloted in a number of schools in 2012. Key supporting documents can be downloaded here:

Sport and Recreation

  • Healthy Food at Sport logo
    • funding provided to Sport and Recreation Services and Nutrition Australia ACT for delivery.

The Healthy Food@Sport project focuses on supporting canteens run by community sports clubs/organisations to increase the range of healthy food and drink choices available to children and young people.

Healthy Food@Sport is a partnership between the Health Directorate, Sport and Recreation Services and Nutrition Australia ACT.

The project offers support to enable canteen managers to switch to healthier menus plus education sessions and resources for members on the benefits of healthy eating and drinking.

The project is currently being piloted by seven ACT community sports clubs/organisations:

  • Basketball ACT
  • Gungahlin Little Athletics Centre
  • Kids Football Club (formally known as Players Football Club)
  • Netball ACT
  • South Canberra Netball Association
  • Touch Football ACT
  • Woden Valley Soccer Club

The pilot phase will expand and work with more community sports clubs/organisations during the Winter season of 2012.
