The program aims to reduce the occurrence of infectious diseases in the ACT community by implementing disease control measures.

The main roles of the unit include:

  • collection and recording of disease notifications
  • follow-up and investigation of notifiable disease cases and the implementation of control measures to prevent them from spreading
  • investigation and management of disease outbreaks
  • informing and developing disease prevention and control strategies.

Notifiable conditions

There are more than 70 notifiable conditions in the ACT. The Chief Health Officer (CHO) must be informed of any known cases of these diseases under the Public Health Act 1997.

You can view a list of current notifiable conditions in the ACT, as well as the Code of Practice on the ACT Legislation Register.

Surveillance data

ACT Health provides surveillance data to the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (NNDSS). You can find this notification data on the NNDSS website.
