The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Unit is located in Policy and Government Relations, Strategy and Corporate, Health Directorate, ACT Government.

The role of the unit is to manage, coordinate and contribute to a range of health policies and projects that have an impact on the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. These include:

• Reporting to the Minister for Health on health issues relating to the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities;
• Working with Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Service to support the delivery of health services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the ACT and surrounding region;
• Working with Gugan Gulwan Youth Aboriginal Corporation to deliver programs to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young peoples;
• Working with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Residential Rehabilitation Service Advisory Board to establish the alcohol and drug service (Ngunnawal Bush Healing Farm and/or NBHF) and providing secretariat support to the NBHF Advisory Board;and
• Implementing initiatives of the National Partnership Agreement on Closing the Gap in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Outcomes: 'Implementation Plan' and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Early Childhood Development Implementation Plan.
