After hours

Image of woman seeking telephone health advice

Coughs, colds, sprains, rashes – your local pharmacist can give you expert advice on many health issues.

For free expert advice and reassurance 24 hours a day, seven days a week, call healthdirect on 1800 022 222, or for the one-off treatment of minor illnesses and injuries seven days a week from 7am-11pm, see a specialist nurse at our Walk-in centre.

For ongoing comprehensive healthcare for everyone, including those with acute problems, children under two years and those with complex medical problems, see this listing of GP’s by suburb.

For serious illness or injury requiring urgent attention, call 000 or go to your local hospital Emergency Department.

Walk-in Centre

Walk in to fast, free treatment for minor injury or illness

Walk-in Centres help people get fast, free, one-off treatment for minor injuries and illnesses.

You can see a specialist nurse for advice, assessment and treatment for minor illnesses and injuries such as cuts and bruises, minor infections, strains, sprains, skin complaints and coughs and colds. If necessary, you'll be redirected to the most appropriate healthcare professional.

The Canberra Hospital Walk-in Centre is open seven days a week, from 7am-11pm. No appointment necessary.

Consultations by appointment only. Fees apply

CALMS provides access to after hours medical care for patients in the Canberra Region. Clinic appointments can be made by phoning the CALMS call centre.

Home visits are available when clinically indicated. However, often only limited care can be provided via a home visit. Home visits are mainly required by residents of nursing homes. Arrangements can be made for a GP to visit you at home if the call centre’s assessment indicates that this is the best way to manage your problem.

Any person living in or visiting the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) can use the service. Home visits are restricted to the ACT, but persons living outside the ACT can access all other CALMS services.

For continuity of health care, a copy of the consultation notes will be forwarded to your nominated General Practitioner with your consent.
