Alcohol, tobacco and other drugs

Tobacco and alcohol are the drugs that cause the most harm in Australian society. Together, they account for 92% of Australian drug-related deaths, 84% of the drug-related burden of disease and injury, and 83% of the drug-related social costs.

ACT drug law reform

Changes to the ACT's Drugs of Dependence legislation will come into effect on 28 October 2023. See Illicit drugs reform in the ACT to find out more about the changes.

Naloxone

The Independent evaluation of the ‘Implementing Expanding Naloxone Availability in the ACT (I-ENAACT)’ Program 2011 – 2014 has been released. The ACT program provides comprehensive overdose management training and naloxone on prescription to be administered by trained peers or family in the event of an opioid overdose.
