Canberra Hospital - Respiratory and Sleep Medicine
The Canberra Hospital's Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine provides a comprehensive service for the investigation and management of all aspects of respiratory and sleep-related disorders.The department provides general respiratory services to inpatients and outpatients, including respiratory function assessment, bronchoscopy, sleep monitoring, Tuberculosis control, asthma education, smoking cessation, as well as clinical management of all respiratory disorders.
In addition to these services, the department has a dedicated Sleep Disorders Unit providing positive airway pressure therapy and an acclimatisation service.

- Respiratory Medicine Specialist Consultations
The Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine have respiratory specialist appointments that are bulk-billed. These outpatients appointments provide comprehensive assessment and management of a wide variety of lung diseases.
A referral is required from a GP to access this service and clinics run each week day.Contact:

- Sleep Medicine Specialist Consultations
The Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine provide bulk-billed comprehensive assessment and management of sleep disorders by a qualified sleep physician. A GP referral is required to access the clinic.
Further investigations in the sleep laboratory, and management of positive pressure therapy can be arranged by the sleep physician after initial consultation.Contact:

- Tuberculosis Service
The Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine have a Tuberculosis (TB) Service which provides:
- Care and management of patients with TB,
- Contact tracing and screening.
The service is available for migrants, health care workers, contacts, GP or specialist referred patients. Additionally, a BCG (Bacillus Calmette Guerin) vaccination clinic operates fortnightly for children under 5 who are travelling overseas to countries that have a high burden of TB.
Tuberculosis (TB) is a curable disease caused by the bacteria (germ) Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. TB can damage person’s lungs or other parts of the body and cause serious illness. There is excellent antibiotic treatment available and complete recovery is expected.Opening Times:*

- Respiratory Function Laboratory
The Respiratory Function Laboratory is a bulk-billed service performing various procedures for both outpatients and inpatients, including:
- Respiratory Function Tests,
- Various Provocation/Challenges Tests including Exhaled Nitric Oxide measurement,
- Cardio-pulmonary Exercise Testing,
- Eucapnic Voluntary Hyperventilation Tests,
- High Altitude Simulation Tests,
- Aeroallergen Skin Tests,
- Six Minute Walk Tests,
- Maximal & Inspiratory & Expiratory Pressures.

- Adult Asthma Education
The Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine provide a free adult asthma education service for people who require information about asthma and how to manage it. Asthma educators assist individuals and families to increase their understanding of asthma and its management, and provide information on:
- Symptoms;
- Trigger factors;
- Devices used to deliver medications;
- Combining sport with asthma;
- Emergency management; and
- Asthma Action Plans.
