Veterinary surgeons' board
The ACT Veterinary Surgeons Board (the Board) is a statutory body established to regulate veterinary practice in the public interest. The main aim of the Board is to protect the public and promote animal welfare through registration of suitably qualified veterinary surgeons and veterinary specialist, and the monitoring of the best practice standards and conduct of the profession. In addition, the Board is responsible to ensure that the provisions of the legislative framework regulating the veterinary profession is administered in a fair and equitable manner.

Board functions
The ACT Veterinary Surgeons Board by the Health Professionals Act 2004. It is a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal, which has its powers prescribed by the Act.
The main aim of the Board is to protect the public through registration of suitably qualified veterinary surgeons and veterinary specialists, and the monitoring of the best practice standards and conduct of the profession.
The Veterinary Surgeons Board aims to continue to provide relevant, accurate, and timely advice and assistance to the public and practitioners on matters relevant to the profession. The Board aims to increase awareness amongst the public and profession of the Board's roles and responsibilities.
The Veterinary Surgeons Board is comprised of seven registered veterinary surgeons, four of whom are appointed by the ACT Minister for Health in accordance with section 5 of the Health Professions Boards (Procedures) Act 1981 and three of whom are elected by veterinary surgeons registered in the ACT and through an election process undertaken by the ACT electoral commission.
The Board is responsible for administering the provisions of the Act. The Board registers suitably qualified veterinary surgeons and veterinary specialists to enable them to practice in the ACT. The Board is also responsible for the consideration of complaints against registered veterinary surgeons or specialists and general monitoring of the conduct of the profession in the ACT.
The Board is empowered to take disciplinary action against veterinary surgeons who may be in breach of certain provisions of the Act. The Act requires that the Board hold a professional or personal assessment panel hearing or a formal Inquiry in accordance with the Act before imposing any disciplinary measures, such as: cautioning or reprimanding the veterinary surgeon, suspension or cancellation of registration, ordering that the registrant undergo medical or psychiatric treatment or counselling, or imposing conditions on the registration of the veterinary surgeon as considered appropriated by the Board.
There are provisions under the Act, which allow for the veterinary surgeon to make an application to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT), for a review of the Boards decision.
