ACT Health has produced these fact sheets for expectant mothers and health professionals attending to their care. They contain important information, including preconception information, antenatal tests for abnormalities, induction of labour, miscarriage, vaginal birth after caesarian, and what to bring to hospital.

The Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) is an organisation of people interested in the promotion and protection of breastfeeding. An informative site for breastfeeding women, their partners, doctors, lactation consultants and midwives.

Calvary Hospital midwives conducts a tour of the Maternity Unit at 2.30 pm every Sunday. Meet at 2.25 pm in the foyer of the Marian Building. No booking required.

Canberra's biggest public hospital provides a comprehensive maternity and neonatal service to residents of the ACT and surrounding region. Here you'll find a comprehensive overview of the services offered - phone us on (02) 6244 2222. Public tours of the Maternity Unit are held at 2pm every Sunday. A midwife will meet the group inside the front entrance to the Maternity Building - no bookings required.

The Canberra Midwifery Program is based in the Birth Centre on the ground floor of the Maternity Unit at Canberra Hospital. Women may be referred by their GP or refer themselves. As there is often a waiting list it is recommended that you book on as early as possible. If you would like to know more about the program there is an information session on Wednesdays from 11.30 - 12.30 in the Birth Centre or you can call us on (02) 6244 3145.

ACT Health offers child health checks through Community Health child health clinics in south, north and central Canberra, and home visits by Maternal & Child Health nurses. Child health checks at key developmental ages promote optimum growth, development and well-being of your child and family. The role of the Australian Government's Child Support Agency is to support separated parents to transfer payments for the benefit of their children.

For mothers with babies aged 4 months and under needing help with breastfeeding issues, settling and sleep issues, and parentcrafting, and for families. Call Community Health Intake on (02) 6207 9977 between 8am and 6pm weekdays.

ACT Health recommends Child health checks at key developmental ages as specified in the childs Personal Health Record (PHR Blue Book). These Maternal and Child Health (MACH) clinics provide opportunities for you to gain important information, support, advice and education relevant to caring for your child. No appointment is needed for brief 15-20 minute consultations at these locations. Pre-booked longer appointments are also available.

SIDS and Kids ACT will host an Early Pregnancy Loss support group on the third Thursday of the month commencing May 2008. Call SIDS and Kids ACT on (02) 6287 4255 for more information.

The Australian Government's Family Assistance Office gives Australian families better access to government services. Instead of going to different agencies to get family assistance, families can get all their payments from just one place.

Mental Health ACT provides specialist treatment and support to those people experiencing a moderate to severe mental illness. This support requires co-operation with other community agencies to ensure that the individual needs of the client are met. The Canberra Midwifery Program is based at the Birth Centre on the ground floor of the Maternity Unit at The Canberra Hospital. Canberra Midwifery Program midwives work with women to create an environment that fosters the natural process of childbirth that is responsive to the needs of women and their babies. The Birth Centre holds information sessions each Tuesday at 2pm to 3pm in the Birth Centre or you can call (02) 6244 3145.

NAPCAN provides parenting brochures, training, support networks and information. NAPCAN has also produced a Safe Sleeping Chart that can be hung above a cot and provides a constant reminder of safe sleeping practices, and gives guidelines for appropriate bedding and sleeping clothing. For families with complex lactation and other feeding problems, failure to thrive, unsettled babies, Post Natal Depression, Child at Risk, special needs, parenting support, behavioural problems in children/families.
